Exterior Cladding
Cladding makes sense in two places: elevations that take a hammering from the weather, and features like gables and dormer cheeks that are awkward to keep painted and pointed. A clad face sheds rain, never needs repainting, and tidies up brickwork or render that has gone past looking its best.
The fitting is what separates a good cladding job from a future problem. Boards go onto treated battens with a ventilation gap and a membrane where the wall needs one, so moisture behind the boards can escape instead of sitting against the brickwork. Trims, corners and closures are fitted properly so wind-driven rain stays out and the edges look finished rather than capped off.
Because we are bricklayers, we deal with the wall itself before covering it. Blown pointing gets raked and repointed and damaged bricks swapped, because cladding over a failing wall just hides the problem while it gets worse. If a wall is not a sensible candidate for cladding, we will tell you that too.

Cladding FAQs
Not when it is fitted with a ventilated cavity, which is the only way we fit it. Boards nailed tight to a wall trap moisture; boards on battens with an air gap let the wall breathe. The gap is the difference between protecting the wall and pickling it.
uPVC is lighter and cheaper and does the job well on most elevations. Composite boards are denser, feel more like timber, hold their colour longer in strong sun and cost more. We will show you samples of both against your brick before you choose.
A wash down with soapy water when it looks grubby. No painting, no staining, no repointing. That is most of the reason people choose it for high gables they are sick of paying to repaint.
Yes, single features are the most common cladding jobs we price. A clad gable or dormer cheek gets rid of the most awkward maintenance spot on the house without changing the whole front.
On most houses, recladding a gable or elevation falls under permitted development, but flats, conservation areas and listed buildings have tighter rules. If your house might be affected we will flag it before any work is booked, and the council can confirm it in writing.
