Brickwork & Repointing in the West Midlands

Repointing and brickwork repairs by a team that lays brick for a living: old mortar out, the right mix in, matched to the wall.

Brickwork & Repointing

Mortar joints are what keep a brick wall waterproof, and they wear out long before the bricks do. When the pointing goes soft, sandy or starts falling out in lumps, rain gets into the wall, and that is when you see damp patches inside, frost popping the brick faces and gable ends starting to look tired. Repointing catches it before the damage spreads to the bricks themselves.

We do it the proper way: the old mortar is ground or raked out to a sound depth, the joints are cleaned off, and the wall is repointed with a mortar mixed to suit the job, matched as closely as we can to the colour and finish of the original. On older houses with solid walls we use a lime-based mix where the wall needs to breathe, because hard cement mortar on soft old brick traps moisture and does more harm than good.

Brickwork is in our name, so it goes further than pointing. We cut out and replace spalled or cracked bricks, rebuild garden and boundary walls, sort damaged gable ends and parapets, and repoint chimney stacks while the scaffold or tower is already up. If we spot something structural that needs more than a repair, we will tell you straight rather than point over the problem.

Brickwork & Repointing FAQs

Run a key along a mortar joint. If it crumbles out sandy, or you can see gaps and shadows between the bricks, the pointing is past its best. Damp patches on inside walls and green staining on the outside are the other common giveaways.

It depends on the wall area, how high the work is and how hard the old mortar is to get out. A patch under a window is a different job to a whole gable end. We quote per job after a free look, so you get an exact written price before anything starts.

We mix to match. New pointing is always a touch fresher than hundred-year-old joints on day one, but we match the sand, colour and joint style so it blends in as it weathers rather than standing out in stripes.

Most houses built before the 1930s have solid walls that manage moisture by breathing through the joints. Hard cement mortar seals them up, so the moisture escapes through the brick faces instead and blows them apart in frost. A lime-based mix keeps the wall breathing and the bricks intact.

Yes. Bricks with blown or crumbling faces get cut out one at a time and replaced with the closest match we can source, then the area is repointed with the rest of the wall. It is all one visit and one quote.
